IIT-Kanpur is located on the Grand Trunk Road, 15 km west of Kanpur City and measures close to 420 hectares. This land was gifted by the Government of Uttar Pradesh in 1960 and by March 1963 the Institute had moved to its current location. If someone had visited it then, he/she would have seen a standing crop, acacia woods, a long winding line of stately mango trees, flocks of peafowl and a conventional country side scene of India. The residential campus is planned and landscaped with a hope for environmental freedom. Halls of residence, faculty and staff houses and community buildings surround the central academic area to provide flexibility in movement and communication. The person who brought this mammoth transformation was Mr.Achyut Kanvinde, a Delhi-based architect. Since the beginning, the Institute has attracted scholars from across the country. The rich cultural diversity of India is reflected in the campus activities of IIT-K as well.
The Campus is located on GT Road at Kalyanpur, about 16 km west of Kanpur city, on 1055 acres of land offered by the Government of UP. It is a residential campus offering accomodation to about 350 faculty members, about 700 support staff members, and about 4000 students. The campus has all the amenities for developing the personal, social and academic skills of the community.

P K Kelkar Library (Formerly Central Library) of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) is an academic Library with a collection of more than 3,00,000 volumes and subscriptions to more than 1000 periodicals. it is one of the best Library in the nation housed in three-storey building with the total 6973 sq. m. floor area. The Abstracting and Indexing periodicals, Microform and CD-ROM databases. technical reports, Standards and thesis are important part of this collection. Facility for Ecological and Analytical Testing (FEAT) has been set up at IIT Kanpur to carry out testing of various organic and inorganic materials and generate awareness about eco-testing and its importance in the export business. The drive for clean products due to strict scrutiny of export material has made it important to establish good eco-testing laboratories all over the country. The Government of India has initiated a series of measures to ensure adequate testing facilities for industries. One such measure has been the establishment of FEAT at IIT Kanpur.
For setting up FEAT, the Ministry of Textiles gave IIT Kanpur a grant of over Rs. 2 crore. The lab started functioning in February 1998. Apart from the initial grant, the facility is expected to be self-sustaining. Development of natural dyes and of alternate solutions for banned dyes stand at the top of the activities of FEAT. Although the facility was initially expected to carry out only testing and analysis of textiles based samples, FEAT took the initiative to open the lab for testing within the Institute and other industries as well. This has helped in better utilisation of the infrastructure, helped more industries and also generated more resources.

Established in 1965, under Kanpur Indo American program with the objective of helping in developing a scientific temper and extension of education through audio visual means, it was one & the only set up in the entire country .
TV Centre of I.I.T. KANPUR came to lime light in 1973 with the live broad -cast of the 3rd cricket test match between INDIA & ENGLAND held at the green park stadium Kanpur. Those were the days when there was no regional TV station. The students used to produce programs relayed to the campus audience. Eminent personalities to appear on I.I.T.-TV included Dr.Radha Krishnan, Pt. Ravishanker , PN Haksar, Dr. Raja Ramanna & Khushwant Singh.
TV Centre produced 12 educational programs on basic concepts of science for the ISRO s 1st SITE experiment . 7 days filming at Bhilai steel plant resulted in installation of a computer which ended the wastage in its billet cutting plant.
4-year B. Tech and 5-year Integrated M. Sc.
The 4-year B. Tech. and 5-year Integrated M. Sc. undergraduate programmes have two components. The first component is the core programme common to all students and is carefully planned to give the students a strong base of general education in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Sciences, Technical Arts, and Humanities and Social Sciences. The second component of the undergraduate programme includes professional courses and a project in the chosen branch of specialisation.
The course structure in the core curriculum provides for large lecture classes with tutorial discussion hours and laboratory sessions in smaller goups. The professional programme, while providing the flexibility of having laboratory courses often independent of the lecture classes, culminates in a project involving the application of modern analysis and design techniques.
Two-year M. Sc.
A limited number of candidates are also admitted to the two-year M. Sc. programme in the disciplines of Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics and Physics. These are open to those who have earned the B. Sc. degree in the relevant discipline.

The goals of the Postgraduate Programmes at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur comprise the following: The development of the highest quality of scientific and engineering manpower to cater to the needs of Industry, R & D Organisations and Educational Institutions who shall have a broad grasp of the fundamental principles of sciences and the scientific method, deep understanding of their area of specialisation, innovative ability to solve new problems, and the capacity to learn continually and interact with multidisciplinary groups. Above all, they should have a capacity for free and objective enquiry, courage and integrity, awareness and sensitivity to the needs and aspirations of society. With this end in view, the programmes are designed to include submission of a thesis through which a student may develop his concepts and intellectual skills.
These programmes with their courses and specialised research aim to prepare students for their professions by enabling a perspective and breadth of knowledge related to the principal divisions of their respective fields of specialisation. A postgraduate student will typically be enrolled for three or four courses each semester, until he/she attains the necessary levels of competence before embarking on his research and thesis.
