IITKGP (Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur)
The history of the IIT system dates back to 1946 when a committee was set up by Hon'ble Sir Jogendra Singh, Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, Department of Education, Health and Agriculture to consider the setting up of Higher Technical Institutions for post war industrial development in India. The 22 member committee headed by Sri N.R.Sarkar, in its report, recommended the establishment of four Higher Technical Institutions in the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern regions, possibly on the lines of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, with a number of secondary institutions affiliated to it. The report also urged the speedy establishment of all the four institutions with the ones in the East and the West to be started immediately. The committee also felt that such institutes would not only produce undergraduates but they should be engaged in research, producing research workers and technical teachers as well.
Situated about 120 km west of Calcutta, Kharagpur can be reached in about 2.5 hrs from the Howrah railway station of Calcutta. Advanced VLSI lab
IIT Kharagpur Alumni and five Industry leaders came up with a visionary proposal to set up a state of the art of the Advanced VLSI Design Laboratory in Kharagpur
The aim is to achieve excellence in design and research using latest technology at the global level and produce trained professional manpower for the industry.
In April 2006, the Lab launched the AVLSI Consortium comprising members from leading industry to support its high quality research activities. The consortium provides a forum for its members to share their ideas, mentor the research activities and share the research output.
Computer & Informatics Center
Computer and Informatics Centre (CIC) provides mainly three types of services namely network services, computational services and lab services to IIT, Kharagpur community. Network services like electronic mail, world wide web, DNS, telnet, ftp etc are provided to all the departments, centres and schools as well as to the Halls of Residences through a gigabit network. Computational services (both, in terms of hardware and software) are provided to the students, faculty and staff members of the institute. Various high end servers like IBM's RS/6000, Sun Blade and Graphics workstations are available in CIC. Various advanced and special purpose softwares such as AutoCad, Matlab, Mathematica, Mapple etc are installed and maintained by CIC. Besides, five labs namely PC Lab I, PC Lab II, PC Lab III, Workstation Lab and Terminal Lab are maintained by CIC for large and/or special purpose practical classes.

Center for Theoretical Studies
The Centre for Theoretical Studies (CTS) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT Kgp) has been recently set up in a part of the Old Building of IIT Kgp. Its primary goal is to generate and nucleate theoretical research on fundamental aspects of basic and engineering sciences. The role of the CTS in the academic framework of IIT Kgp is to bring together people of similar interests under a common umbrella. The CTS, apart from acting as a facility for research in theoretical science and engineering, will also train graduate students and provide opportunities to post doctoral workers and researchers from outside IIT Kgp. Additionally, the CTS will have an active visitors programme of both short and long term visitors and organise seminars, workshops on a regular basis on diverse topics.
The Central Library began its existence in 1951. Since then, it has grown in size and content along with the Indian Institute of Technology to take the present shape. All these years, it has been the life-line for the academic activity of the institute. At present, it stands as a modern library with a lot of automation and as the largest of the seven IIT's in terms of the number of books and journals.
