The Indian Institute of Technology, Patna (IIT Patna)
The Indian Institute of Technology, Patna (IIT Patna) is an autonomous institute for education and research in science, engineering and technology located in Patna, India. It is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. It is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 which declares these eight IITs as well as the conversion of Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University to IIT.
The Act was passed in the Lok Sabha on 24 March 2011 and by the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012.
About the Logo
The gear wheel in the logo represents technology while the atomic orbitals signify sciences. The sun within them conveys that science subjects are studied at par with technological subjects. The mathematical symbols pi (?) and zero (0) signify the efforts of the great Indian mathematician Aryabhatta who hails from the ancient kingdom of Magadha. The saffron and green bands encompassing the logo represent the national flag of India. The Sanskrit Sloka “Vidyaarthee Labhathey Vidyaam” means that knowledge is attained by the one who aspires it.
Campus and location
IIT Patna’s permanent campus will be located at Bihta, 35 km from Patna at a 500 acres (200 ha) site.
Until completion of the permanent campus, the Institute operates from a temporary 10 acres (4.0 ha) complex in Pataliputra colony, Kurji, in buildings which have been renovated and was previously used by the Naveen Government Polytechnic. Recently the Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus at Bihta.
The academic building has classrooms equipped with audio-visual equipment and laboratories for chemistry, physics, and computer science. It also has a computer centre and various laboratories for the study of electronics. There are facilities for video conferencing and for running a virtual classroom. The block houses the new Auditorium.
The science block has classrooms, faculty rooms and laboratories for physics, chemistry and mathematics. These include the materials research and optics research facilities of the Physics Department, the chemistry instruments and chemistry research facilities of the Chemistry Department and the computational research facility of the Mathematics Department.
Mechanical engineering block
The mechanical engineering block houses the mechanical workshop and includes basic and conventional manufacturing laboratories, as well as facilities for the study of CAD/CAM, robotics and automation, fluid mechanics/machinery, heat transfer and data acquisition. There are also areas for the study of engines, materials testing, metrology and the dynamics of machines.
Electrical engineering block
The Department of Electrical Engineering is evolving since the inception of IIT Patna in the year 2008. The major objective of the Department is to impart high quality education and research. The major research areas of the department include Communications, Signal Processing, VLSI, Electric Drives, Power Systems and Power Electronics. The Department has online access to IEL, Science Direct, Springer and other online journals. Software like MATLAB and GAMS are available with the Department in order to accelerate the research. Instructional laboratories for Basic Electronics, Analog Electronics Digital Electronics,Digital Signal Processing, Embedded Systems, VLSI, Electrical Machines, Power Electronics and Power Systems are fully operational.
The Software Technology Park of India building has a conference room, a placement cell and faculty chambers. It also has a Hardware Laboratory of the Computer Science Department and the Embedded Systems, DSP and Simulation Laboratories of the Electrical Engineering Department.

Two new hostel buildings, Aryabhatta and Ashoka, have been renovated and modernized along with two completely new built hostels to accommodate around 500 students. The hostel buildings are situated in a walled compound 100 meters from the institute building. Each room has two to three occupants. Accommodation for women is provided in flats which are within walking distance from the institute buildings.

The medical facilities are provided to the staff and students through an outsourced private nursing home. A one hour per day for five days a week health service is available at the institute. A contract has been signed with two private hospitals for credit based indoor service.A 24-hour ambulance service is provided by these hospitals in case of emergencies
The central library is in the academic block and its catalogue is available on the intranet. It is equipped with video surveillance and digital issuing of books.
