Women empowerment - A cause for increasing divorce rate in India.

Favor

  • Women empowerment stands for empowering women with legal and social rights, education, awareness about self and the world.

  • Increase in numbers of divorce can be attributed in part to women empowerment since women being more aware of their legal rights would not mind walking out of a violent or unfulfilling relationship.

  • As women become more independent financially, there is a lesser probability that a women stays in a relationship out of sheer necessity and obligation.

  • On the other hand with women doing well as men if not better the traditional Indian male might find it difficult to have a more successful second half.

Against

  • In past, males in India might be embarrassed to ask for divorces due to family pressures and guilt of leaving his wife and children without proper financial support.

  • Laws have broadened definition of domestic violence to include not just physical, but mental and emotional abuses as grounds of divorce. These laws have contributed too many unilateral decisions to walk out of abusive relationships. Although these laws apply to both sexes, these were meant to be a step towards women empowerment.

  • Influence of Western Culture. With globalization, increased communication and more issues breached on television, increased divorces may have been encouraged

  • Lifestyle change: Increased work hours, inter-action between colleagues of opposite sex. These may also lead to divorces although not only from women's end... It would be interesting to note whether increased divorce rates are in cities only or villages also

Conclusion

  • Women empowerment is not the only cause for the increase in the divorce rate. It is also the change in the social and family structure. Inclination to nuclear families, work pressure, lesser adjustment and a declining trust to the institution of marriage.

Point:

In my opinion male and female both are responsible for activity like divorce, because we can not clap with a single hand. And if we talk about women empowerment it is the right of women to empower themselves and it is factor behind the growth of a family and socity. Ego, lack of responsibility, incompatibility, carelessness, inclination toward western culture, degradation in moral values etc are various valid reason for increase in divorce cases nowadays.

Point: may be that yes divorce rates have increased due to women empowerment but the reason for that is not negative at all rather it is a positive sign because it shows that women have become more aware of their rights and self respect.unlike a few years ago when even if women were suffeing from domestic violence, they continued their married life which is just not correct and unfair on the part of women.

Point: Gender Biased Laws have also been a reason for divorce because now girls have become gold diggers. Girls know that they can legally extort money on the name of laws. Marriage has now become a money extorting business which is the reason why men prefer to avoid getting married.
