Are film-makers harming folk culture?

Favor

  • Producer and director take a gamble trying to woo crowd by showing what they want. It's all commercial. It's not a charity, so while adding entertainment to original folk stories, sometimes they lost the gist of real story and basically distort the original history.

  • Current trend in movies is towards folk culture, which may fade away soon.

  • The producers are distorting history and giving a wrong picture of real life story to viewers for making money.

  • What a cinema is showing may not be exact folk culture because movies are created for entertainment. For brining entertainment quotient in a movie most of the time makers forgot about the folk cultures and values.

  • There was a movie released recently named after Abraham Lincoln. We all know Mr. Abraham Lincoln played a great role in history but this movie shows him as a vampire slayer. So film maker completely misrepresented history in this case.

Against

  • Film makers are promoting our values and traditions by movies. Youngsters are more interested in video games now so at least films teach them a bit about our folk history and values.

  • If a movie is on folk culture then it should elucidate the beauty of the culture and there should not be any masala added to lure the audience.

  • Folk culture is to be preserved in its natural and an inheritance should not be used to make money out of it by depicting the same in movies.

  • Humans are any ways making museums to keep our history safe. Making few films would not harm our history.

Conclusion

  • It should ok if filmmakers are making folk movies but one thing they should keep in mind, that they must not present wrong facts in front of viewers.

Point: Movies leave a very strong impression on a tender young mind. Youngsters believe that if it is shown in the movie, or done by hero/ heroine, it is o.k. and acceptable, whereas such things are often far from reality. Film-makers make such things in the name of business and money making, minus their responsibility towards the society. And audience is mostly blind without any say towards it. See how many people have shown their dislike towards it and how many have blindly taken those dance moves and wordings. Folk culture is not vulgar as shown in the movies. There is a lot of sophistication and etiquette in the rural folk culture also, which is mostly ignored.

Point: Folk culture has been passed down across generations using different media - word-of-mouth, books and now the internet. Films also serve as a medium of communication. Film-makers represent a group of communicators who pass down folk culture. Film-makers as communicators need to balance the commercial aspects of conveying a message with the message being delivered.Film makers (along with the censor board) also need to address the audience to who the message is being delivered - not all the people who watch movies will understand or appreciate the message being delivered. For example, we have cartoons for children, movies rated PG or 18 above.Given all of this, film makers need to be responsible for what message they would like to deliver, how and also to whom.

Point: Films are the strongest medium to convey the social message to people. There are lot of good topics, on which, movies can be made. But still, most of the film makers are busy in making non-sense movies. Regional film industries, despite having low-budget, are creating worth-watching movies, the movies which can bring about revolution, the movies which put some light on the unnoticed aspects.

Point: A lot of mainstream films show the protagonists to be rich urban NRI characters and the movies too are predominantly shot abroad.why cant we have films shot in India and about Indian characters not NRI's. Why are v apologetic about our culture and roots?

Point: I dont think they are harming our folk culture instead spreading it in youngsters. Many of us came to know about our culture or Gods from TV/films, i think directors should make more and more movies about folk culture

Point: my point is that...its not the fault of film-makers its actually the fault of people who take every things in an negative sought of way...nd when they are asked about it they blame others...so here also we are pointing on film-makers...they make films which the audience want to watch nd before commencing any movie they always state whether the content or the people are fictitious or not...so its in the mind of viewers to take the film in an possitive or an negative manner...
